KVM Switches in the Television Broadcast Facility
By JAY SIPOS Director, Broadcast Systems Engineering

A KVM (keyboard, monitor, and mouse) switch allows users to access multiple PCs or servers from a single keyboard, monitor, and mouse.  KVM switches have become an important part of today’s IT-centric television master control, production, post-production, graphics, and newsroom systems.  KVM switches in a multi-channel master control or network operations center can allow for multiple operator access to computer equipment assigned to any of the program channels.  This feature provides for diversity in case of equipment failure and allows a supervisor to take control of any program channel.

There are many benefits to using a KVM switch with multiple ports for users and computers.  The KVM switch can allow users in various locations throughout a facility to have remote access to multiple computers located in a central equipment room.  The mission-critical server equipment can be rack-mounted in an equipment room configured for optimum climate control, power conditioning, and security.  The central equipment room also allows for improved maintenance access to computer equipment by removing the equipment from the operator locations.  KVM switches utilizing IP switching solutions allow for maintenance access from a remote location over the corporate network.  The user stations can be configured to limit access to specific computers by assigning rights to each username.  Administrative rights and usernames can be password protected.

Some key factors to consider in the selection of KVM switches include: cable length to user stations, display resolutions supported, number of switching ports, expandability, and compatibility with specialized television equipment keyboards such as those used with some character generators.  Typically, a CAT-5 cable is used to connect the user station to the switch.  The user stations can typically be extended to 1,000 feet from the KVM switch.  The KVM switch should not downgrade the user interface by displaying a lower resolution as compared to a direct connection.  KVM switches supporting display resolutions up to 1,600 x 1,200 are available. The KVM switch should have a sufficient number of spare ports to allow for future growth.  Some KVM switches afford expansion capability by allowing the switches to be cascaded.  The KVM switch and user station selected should be compatible with any specialized television equipment keyboards that are to be used.  Full support of all keyboards functions such as format keys and display indicators should be verified.

Many types of KVM switches are available to facilitate the integration of computers and specialized computer-based television equipment in the broadcast facility.  The television systems integrator utilizes these products to create an efficient operational workflow.
